Had a similar problem once.  Bought a 4.2GB toshiba drive that worked very
well in my old compaq but wouldn't boot in the libretto.  Someone on the
list suggested i boot the libretto from a floppy, then fdisk and format the
harddrive in the libretto.  Never figured out what difference it made, but
worked like a charm...saved me a hard drive.

The very best way to do this is to f-disk IN THE LIBRETTO. As you may
recall, BIOS "lies" to f-disk by the amount necessary for hibernation.

However, I am not sure what happens up in the 6GB+ range.
