Subject: Re: L50 not recognizing two new 6GB Toshiba drives

Hi there,

I was about to report back to the list about my successful resolution of this
problem in my 70CT, but was called into a meeting, so...

I also bought a MK6411MAT Toshiba drive. And with Arndt's help managed to get
it to work! Many thanks, Arndt!!

As Arndt says in his post today, the problem is that the drive defaults to
Cable-Select and there is not obvious way to force the drive into master mode.
The available jumpers do not address this problem. I actually had two drives
with this problem, both from Toshiba - one 1GB, one 6.4GB - the solution below
cured both drives.

The only way to do this, appears to be to connect pins 28 and 30 on the IDE
connector together with a thin piece of wire (or solder it - if you have the
right equipment).

The pin layout can be found on the Toshiba-europe page:
http://resource.toshiba-europe.com/europe/diskproducts/jumper/hdd/mkjump.jpg

The top row of jumpers are uneven numbers 1-43, the bottom row are numbers 2-44
[with the gap being 'pin 20'] Pin 1 is marked on the drive - near the gap to the
jumper pins.

Make sure the wire makes contact with both pins propperly and does not touch any
other pins or contacts on the green drive board - I initially used a wire that
was too thick and stood away from the pins once the drive was pushed into the
machine - in the end I used a bit of solder wire as it is very soft and can be
laid tightly around the two pins - not sure how long it'll last, but it works to
start with until I plug up the courage to solder it into place. I put a piece of
insulation tape over the green board edge to stop the wire touching any
contacts. That's it.

Hope this makes sense. Drop me a line if you need further help.

Anke

Subject: L50 not recognizing two new 6GB Toshiba drives

I've recently tried two new MK6411MAT Toshiba drives in my L50. It doesn't
recognize either of them. It is working fine with a used MKD6412MAT right now,
but it sure doesn't like those 6411's.

Before I get into the details of exactly how these drives don't work, I'd like
to solicit anyone else's experience (good and bad) with L50s and the MK6411
drive. I'm running BIOS 6.50.

Thanks for any help.
