For that unit, I believe you set COM2 as an IrDa device in BIOS. Once the
infrared device is working on COM2, you need the MSIR2.0 driver package from
MS.

When MSIR2.0 is running, it takes the physical device on COM2 and makes it
available to programs as a virtual COM and LPT port. For example, when the
MSIR2.0 is running it says something like "Infrared support on COM2 is
enabled, providing application support on COM3 and LPT3" and you set your
communications programs up to COM3 ( NOT COM2 ).

Also, the MSIR2.0 sets up a control panel applet where you can pause
Infrared for battery savings, and also it broadcasts its availability and
looks for other IrDa devices to connect to. You get a little half Ir icon
which is red but blinks green every 3 seconds. When another device is
present it makes TWO halfs and looks differerent.
