Subject: Re: Linux on Libretto 50

A while ago (2 months?) I ran Debian 2.1 on my libby (50ct, no modifications
or upgrades done, original 810meg hd), with "little" trouble. Installation
was easy, I just tossed the hd in my other, non-pcmcia floppy drive laptop,
a Satellite 410CDT, and went to it, then put the drive back in the libby.
Then, I promptly set to work seeing which of my PCMCIA devices would work out
of the box.. only my CD-ROM did (a Panasonic scsi cdrom). After a bit of
struggling and flailing of arms, I managed to get a null modem connection
setup between my FreeBSD desktop and the libby, and went to work getting a few
things I thought I'd need.. (newest pcmcia drivers/utilities, new-ish kernel
sources, and the Libretto floppy driver..)

At this point, I applied all sorts of patches, and, finally got to the actual
recompilation of the kernel, and all went well. When I was done, i installed
the new kernel, rebooted, and found that, the same thing, only my cdrom worked.

Though, this didn't discourage me, I simply went to work tweaking and tuning and
drinking *lots* of soda. Simple modifications made my combo modem/ethernet card
work, but, alas, the entire time i ran linux on the libby, I could *NEVER* get
the floppy drive to work.

To end this long rambling recollection, I now run FreeBSD on the libby, and I
installed it without moving the HD or anything.. just dialed up to my ISP with
my combo modem/ethernet card and installed, and all works well.. including my
floppy drive :)

(PS: have fun with it, but remember, reinstalling windows is a bitch sometimes..)
