The manys ways: (they also work on the /win95 /win98 /win9x setup directories
on the Windows 95/98/ME CD-ROM discs - you only need the files in these
directories, nothing else, to setup windows)
1. Assuming you have a floppy disk drive and nothing else (ie. 100%
unformatted, unfdisked HD), you can simply fdisk, format c: /u /s, then make
sure you have a copy of one of the various parallel port Laplink-type PC-to-PC
transfer software on the HD.
That list includes: Interlink (comes with DOS 6.22), Laplink (buy it for
DOS), Ghost (a bit more troublesome because it only copies partitions, but you
can simply copy a partition on the host HD that has the entire /win2k directory
over to the Libretto), etc.
Softseek.com, winfiles.com, etc. should have more.
Of course, you'll need a Laplink/Direct Cable Connection parallel/serial
cable to transfer files from a desktop/host PC that has a CD-ROM drive, and
preferably the parallel cable that is much, much faster.
(although to transfer the entire 200+MB Win2K install will take overnight
over a p.port cable anyways...)
2. Assuming you've got a network card in addition to the above, and have the
appropriate DOS drivers, and have a server to log into, you can then transfer
the entire /win2k directory from the CD-ROM over the network to your Libretto
much faster.
Various ways are possible.
eg. setup a novell client to log into a novell server.
eg. setup tcp/ip on the Libretto and ftp the files from a ftp server.
eg. setup the drivers as needed by Ghost (www.symantec.com) and Ghost
an exisiting partition that has the /win2k directory over to your
Libretto.
eg. install that free DOS web browser (arachne? russian made as I remember)
and download the web hosted directory (of course, compressed as a
single file using ZIP/ARJ/etc. to prevent the hassles of downloading
multiple files).
3. Assuming you've got just the floppy drive, you can simply ZIP/ARJ/compress
and split the entire /win2k directory on the cd-rom over to lots of floppy
disks and transfer it that way to the Libretto.
4. Assuming you've got a working Windows setup already, simply network download
the entire /win2k directory off the CD-ROM on to the Libretto, then go to
DOS (exit windows entirely), rename all directories as OLD* or delete them,
then
run the win2k setup from the directory copied to the Libretto.
You can also transfer it over the very slow IR port.
5. Forget about installing Win2K over the network - the moment it has to
reboot, you'll lose the connection with the CD-ROM and it'll fail to install
completely.
6. Dump the entire /win2k directory off the CD-ROM onto any available PCMCIA
memory/HD card, such as a 1GB IBM Microdrive, or a 512MB flash memory card.
Naturally, you'll need the appropriate drivers under DOS to run setup off the
card.
7. Pull the Libretto HD out, connect to a 2.5" to 3.5" IDE coverter ($10),
attach to desktop, copy the /win2k directory over, then reinstall the HD into
the Libretto.
