Subject: SIIG PCMCIA fan

recent message included dialogue about the SIIG PCMCIA cooling fan. i have
been using the fan at work and at home every day for about 8 months. that's
more than 400 fan insertions. one person's opinion about the fan (mine) are
that:

*** the fan has saved my cpu from meltdown. my first 50CT was overclocked
to 100Mhz. with my applications running, it shut down 2-3 times per day.
six months of that and it died.

*** since buying the fan, my 50CT (overclocked to 133Mhz) has only had a
thermal shut down when i forgot to insert the fan.

*** the fan is tight. i insert it and remove it gently.

*** no drivers are required. when the PCMCIA bus gets power, the fan runs.

i have absolutely no fears about the fan. without it, i was continuously
frustrated by thermal shutdowns...and eventually trashed the libretto. this
is the first case i heard of where the fan may have caused damage (fixed by
a drop of glue). please don't overlook the risk of NOT using the fan.

...who doesn't wear a motorcycle helmet, but always uses a PCMCIA fan and
wears a seatbelt. evidence that we each deal with risk in different ways :)

The name of "one person" is Nicolas Rubinstein. As I remember he is no
longer on the list. He is otherwise smart guy and gave us many useful tips
about Win2k and overclocking. By the way I remind you that he fixed his
motherboard with a drop of glue.
