Ed,
You might like to try Sonique <http://sonique.lycos.com/dload.phtml> as the
player and turn all the fancy graphics off. That should go ok. (it uses as
much processor doing the display stuff as it does decoding). Also, if you
have MS office components, make sure FastFind is disabled as it has a
tendency to start sniffing at the disc just when you don't want it to...
And of course the obvious: make sure the disc is defragged so that any audio
can be got without too much shuffling around of the heads. Don't believe the
defragger when it tells you that it's only 2% and doesn't need doing...
