Scandisk is a symptom, not the problem...it's jsut coming up cos windows
isn't shut down properly due to the main problem...

Thinks - you've put a upsized disc in these machines? Was it 9.5mm thick?
Did you remove the spacers first?

you can try a memory tester but the results may be ambiguous. You probably
have a broken connection to the memory chip address lines causing things to
be written and read from the wrong addresses.

If you can solder. If you have a very fine soldering iron. If you have
confidence - or nothing to lose...
Pull the machine to bits. Make sure the disk drive is either an 8.45mm thick
unit, or remove the spacers from the case. Use an absolute minimum of solder
and touch each ram connection just to reflow the solder. The chips are
surface mounted on little pcbs (top and bottom) then the pcbs are mounted to
the motherboard. That's where the break will be (if that's the problem of
course!) Be warned - the leg spacing is around 20 or 40 to the inch...
You may find that the machine works *out* of its case and that you can stop
it working by prodding the memory - this will confirm a broken joint. I have
successfully fixed one machine this way so there is hope.
The memory is under the black plastic sheet on the bottom left of the
motherboard.
