Dear Ashley:

I sent this in a month ago, but somehow it did not make it to the mailing list. Hope
this
helps. Setting up the infrared is possible but difficult.

Dear All:

After a lot of conflicting information from a myriad of sources, most of it wrong,
I finally did get the built-in infra port on my Libretto 100CT to work with the
infra red port on my Motorola Timeport cell phone the P7389. Just for the record,
I am using the Toshiba Infrared Monitor Version 2.0 (you do not need 3.0) and a
second program, also from Toshiba, that must be installed with it, called "Infra
Red Driver", for Win95 which allows which allows one to select virtual COM ports, 3
through 6 to use for the built in infrared connection, not just COM 1.

I think that the second piece of software is available only from Toshiba on their
CD-ROM. I do not think it is up on their website. I found it here in France.
Both programs HAVE TO BE INSTALLED MANUALLY using the Settings, the Add Hardware
option and the infra red driver has to be installed before the infrared monitor, or
it will not work. Also be sure to check the "software" box in your dial up
adapter under Advanced. Also, if you use a PC Modem card, you have to have the
very latest firmware update to allow the PC card to release the virtual ports for
infrared use, and you have to install the PC card before you install the infrared
modem so the card will select COM 2 hopefully. If things do not work, you have to
re-install everything again to clear the system.

I had to upgrade my Xircom 10/100 CEM56 multi-function card to the new firmware
version 2.6, dated April 2000 before the infrared would work. Infrared on my
machine runs now on COM 5 and is supported through COM 4, so the built in infrared
uses not one, but two virtual COM ports, one for the physical connection and one
for connection to the software (the software support connection). If that is not
enough to make one crazy, Motorola's infra red only supports 8 bits, not 7 bits,
so you have to make sure that your ISP's program is the very latest software.
Compuserve 3.0 will not work at all. Compuserve 4.2 works fine.

It has taken me over 8 weeks of nonsense to figure all this out. It should have
been much easier, but it was not. Thanks to everyone who tried their best to help,
including the great guys at ICL here in Paris who were just as lost as I was, due
to a general lack of information from Toshiba. Also thanks to the Toshiba
representative at Surcouf, the computer store here in Paris, who found the Infra
Red Driver software for me on a CD-ROM. Also thanks to the guys at Motorola who
finally figured out what was wrong with the Xircom PC firmware and other PC cards
that cause conflicts in the Toshiba Libretto 100CT plus other laptops. The guys at
Motorola also discovered that the Motorola infra red phone software will not work
with Compuserve 3.0. Between Toshiba and Motorola not communicating well with
their reps it was a nightmare. They are lucky to have good people representing
them that can solve problems without decent support from the factory, although now
I am sure someone will now say that the information was easily obtainable somewhere
obscure or obvious the web....lol. All of this stuff was built into both the
laptop and the cell phone. In my view it should have been much easier to use.
Whew....
