No more physical free RAM = slow pig death on any PC.

OOPS! Win98 eats up more RAM than 95 does. And Office 2000 is a RAM PIG,
happily gobbling up anything in sight.

Best bet? Win95B + Office 97 for a lighter install that'll run decently
quick, save RAM, and still let you be mostly compatible with everyone else.

(win95B only takes up 10-14 MB to boot vs. Win98 which gobbles anything under
20MB up right away)

(I'd say faster with Win95B and Wordperfect myself, but then again, I love WP
5.1 DOS.... Still nothing like not waiting AT ALL for WP 5.1 to load =) since
it is so small. )

Beyond that, Win98 (+ 98lite.net if you strip out the IE pig that gobbles up
lots of RAM in Win98 just booting!, replacing it, of course, by the lighter
Netscape 4.76 or Opera 5.0 - my pick is for Netscape) + Office 2000 w/o "Fast
Find", "Office Toolbar", or "Office Startup" installed or loaded in the Startup
Menu (kill the 3D animated help guy as well to save some more CPU time). I'd
still recommend going back to Office 97 due to its smaller footprint and
smaller RAM demands. If you can toss Office, WP5.1 DOS is still an excellent
WP, and faster loading and more stable by lightyears than Word. (I've never
seen WP crash in my 10+ years of use vs. Word's problematic operation -
documents that fry themselves mysteriously, hangs, crashes, etc.)

No matter what, you've got to kill Fast Find installed by Office because
it'll sit in the background eating up CPU and RAM like crazy. Also, no Office
startup in the Startup Menu because that'll oink RAM as well. No Office
Toolbar either or you'll be wasting more RAM and screen space to that.

You may want to lower your screen depth from 24/32-bits to 16-bits to free up
some more RAM as well.

Defragmenting might help as well if you've suddenly dropped that 500+MB
Office 2000 install onto your fragmented HD.

Kill any and all unnecessary applications in the background. That virus
scanner doesn't need to run all the time - only when you're online. All those
other funky toolbar applications can go as well.

Turn the speed up in the Toshiba Power control panel to 100%/max speed for
the CPU. Having it turned down by accident will kill your performance.

All I can say is that on my prior L50/J with Office 9x/J installed on it, it
ran just peachy overclocked to 100Mhz for me. Not the fastest load times out
there, but quite acceptable and snappy once loaded - and processing everything
in Japanese as well!, which takes up more CPU time than a plain-jane English OS does.
