Subject: trouble formatting floppies :(
My Libretto 50 (running Win95) has become unable to format floppies.
Here's what I've done (during my last attempt):
======================
1) Tested media:
Formatted 2 floppies under Win95 in another machine. Works fine.
2) Tested format on Lib:
Tried to "Full Format" these floppies under Win95. Get the error
messages:
a) "Windows could not format this disk. Either the selected
capacity is not valid for this disk, or the disk is damaged and
may need to be replaced."
or
b) "Windows could not format this disk because an error occurred
while trying to format the file allocation table area. This
disk is damaged and may need to be replaced."
3) Tested hardware:
Restarted Win95 in MD-DOS mode, and ran "format a:" on these two
floppies. Works fine.
4) Rechecked media:
Exited back to the "usual" Win95 graphical mode, and ran "thorough
scandisk" on both floppies. No bad sectors reported.
5) Rechecked format
Tried to "full format" these floppies again, getting the same
error messages as in (2) above.
6) Relieved tension.
Banged my head against the table. ;-)
======================
I've searched the web (using dogpile.com) and Microsoft's knowledge
base for the error messages above, and have found nothing relevant.
Any suggestions on how to proceed?
TIA,
Mike
