I've tried pressing the hidden 'reset' switch through the pinhole on the RHS
between the IR port and the PC-card slots - is that the same as the hard
reset button?

When I press it (with the machine already 'on'), the HDD light comes on for
a second or two, then goes off again - exactly the same as when I press the
normal on/off button.

The last time I used it was with external power and it definitely shut down
normally, nothing unusual, and I then removed the external power. I don't
know of any reason why it would switch itself back on (and with the lid
closed - is it possible it did that?); seems unlikely as the battery is in
good condition and only took a couple of minutes to reach full charge the
next time I tried to use it, ie hibernation could not have been triggered by
a low battery.
