Wow... a lot of ways to go about getting maps on the old 50CT. This problem
I'm having configuring this 3COM combo modem must be something unusual... or
still waiting the person with the magic fix. On the subject of maps though:

That's great! I wonder how it compares in functionality to other programs.
I spent 4 months traveling around the USA last summer in my camper, and
found a lot of little things I wished I could have, or change in my Rand
McNally software. Things like the capability to change the start and finish
times of your planned route as you begin each day. The ability to plan a
trip and see detailed maps in the same program (you have to switch between
Tripmaker and StreetFinder with R.M., a real pain). The ability to plan a
route door to door. R.M. only allows for city to city routes. I forgot to
mention that I just acquired Doloreme Street Atlas USA which allows for
this. With a big heavy camper, it'd be nice if the program showed the
topography too, and some function to allow planning routes around heavy
grades.

This sounds like the way to go... though after a quick search, I couldn't
locate a vendor online to see how much the program runs. None of my price
search engines came up with anything either.

I'll have to look at the other Delorome programs. I imagine I'm not going
to find all the features I'd like in one program. Deloreme Steet Atlas lets
me plan door to door routes, but I imaging the topo porgram is a separate
beast.

Like some people, I tend to avoid Microsoft stuff because of ethics problems
I have with them... but they do make some great stuff. I've heard Microsoft
Streets is a great program. I saw an old copy being sold at Costco for $6
after a $20 mail-in rebate. I could swallow that without any problems to
see just what features it has.

Now is this the Delorome Street Atlas program that I have, or something
else. I just picked up this Deloreme program recently after getting back
from my trip last summer, and haven't had the chance to check it out yet.

Arg... I'd rather just have the whole darned program on the HDD, and have as
much flexibility in any one situation as possible. For planning ahead, this
sounds great, but I'm notorious for being pretty feeble in that regard!

I created a D: partition on my HDD and tried to install and run Rand McNally
to and from it, but I guess the software can distinguish a partition from a
CD-ROM drive... obviously, as the little CD-ROM icon pops up, and moves down
the line when other HDD or virtual partitions pop up in front of it.

I'm assuming the method your describing Pres, get's around that somehow. I
looked into the Rand McNally .ini files, but saw no reference to any drive
letters. This fix is pretty much contingent on there being such a line in
an ini file somewhere though.

Now, would it be possible to 'download', as you put it, the entire map of
the USA onto the hard drive with Deloreme, or might that entail a long
arduous process of some sort.

So who's this chick Anita Neil? Do you think she'd like to come along with
me on my next trip down to Mexico?

Well... I'll look into the capability of my Deloreme Street Atlas software
to put maps onto my HDD. I like the idea of "Norton Virtual Drive" the
best, if I can find a copy, or find some shareware out there that does the
same thing (couldn't come up with anything at TuCows.com or Winfiles.com).
Then too, for $6.00, if Costco still has a copy of Microsoft Streets, that
sounds like a good one to look at, esp. if it will load onto the HDD too.
Now where's that link to a $80 40GB HDD for this little Libby... ;-)

Thanks for all the feedback on map software folks... One more day, and
counting the hours to my having to return this 3COM modem. Am still nervous
about deleting the entry in Device manager for the PCIC controller that
doesn't have the IRQ and memory range settings the 3COM rep said it should
have. What the heck? May as well risk that at the last moment. What can
it mess up other than not being able to plug in external stuff anymore!

Matt
