Sounds like dodgy memory...try removing then reseating any expanded memory 
you might have - under the kb on the left, and you might also try reseating 
the hard drive. If the bios doesn't see the drive, there's a *long* pause 
before it decides to complain.

Plus - load a copy of the bios onto a floppy using a desktop - onto a 
bootable disk. Try and flash the bios (um, can't remember exact sequence but 
I think it's hold the backspace key on powerup, with the floppy in the 
drive) and see if it gets through that.

The tech manual isn't helpful - there's a lovely flowchart of things to do, 
90% of which end up with 'change the motherboard' :(
