Subject: Off topic: My adventure of migrating hp database to palm.

I am reporting my little adventure of migrating the hp200lx database to palm; for
anybody who may be interested, if not do not waste your time reading this message,
apology.

I have been using the lib50 until I sold it away last year but I am still on the list
(evesdropping?)

Case history:

Owns a hp200lx and uses the database application that has an extention *.gdb. For
me, this database is more than a PIM and I have a few hundred records (mainly my
clients' particulars and their very confidential financial information; no price for
guessing my occupation.) For each record, I have created more than 80 fields, some
radio buttons, text fields etc...

Limitations:

Copied my client.gdb to the harddisk and used MS Excel to import it. Informations
appear together with garbage in random. How do I proceed from there?
HP support wasn't helpfull at all. After bouncing a few mails thru' and fro with them,
I decided to try my luck here. And here is where it takes off.

Finally:
Followed Casey's link to www.palmtop.net/super.html
Thanks to Casey, found one freeware named "OL2LXinst.exe", downloaded and unzipped it.
Also thanks to E. Smith and Yeshiah.
With this, I can supposingly migrate the data to outlook. But the challenge come when
I have so many fields to map into outlook contact's limited PIM field. (How now?)

Solution:
In the OL2LX windows, check "pause to allow manual editing of text data", then click
on convert data. The default text viewer for your computer will open now. Close it,
and then choose cancel.
A new client.txt is now created in the directory C:\OL2LX
Now I use MS Excel to open this "client.txt". You will need to "parse" it as the data
are all in one column. Parsing the file will split the "string of data" in column "A"
of the spreadsheet to many columns; ie "A", "B", "C", and so on
Now I have 80 over columns and a few hundrew rows of data (column denotes the fields
and rows denotes the records of the original database.)
The next step is to join some of the columns into one column by using the Excel
function. ("&")
Repeated this joining until I am finally satisfied with the rearranging and save the
client.txt

Now I am ready to import the data to Outlook.
In the Outlook Contact folder, I did the importing and mapping of the fields which is
straight forward from the importing wizard.
Yes, all the data now appears in Contact, and I am thus able to sync them to the Palm.

That it, hope this will benefit someone, someday.
