Subject: Car Power, Wireless Gateways and Virtual CD's

A few things of possible interest:

1) Several people asked me if I was sure that the Mobility Electronics
MAA-3406-10 air/auto power adapter would work with the L100 because the
literature stated Toshiba 3000 series. Well, I got it and it works
great. The MAA-3404-10 model which is all over eBay is for the L50-70
series. Someone pointed out that they had successfully used the straight
auto voltage for a long time. In addition to being the correct 15v, this
unit has filtering of power line noise. Starter motors can induce voltage
surges over 100v when the car is started. That's why cell phone adapters
(cheap ones) say to plug them in after you start the car. Nobody does
that, but last month my wife's cell phone charger died of this abuse. I
think this adapter is a good solution. Best price I found (about $10 less)
was at buy.com Here's a link to them:

2) I went shopping on zdnet.com for a 3com Wireless gateway and AirConnect
ethernet card and found a super deal. Most of the 3com Home Wireless
Gateways were priced from $299 to $349. List is $399. There was one
company with a price of $234. I thought it was an error. The AidConnect
was $124 vs. $175 most other places. To top it off, 3com has a $50 mail-in
rebate that ends with orders postmarked today. Have to hurry if this
interests you. So, after rebate, what would have cost me $580 for a total
wireless solution ends up $330. Here is a link to the supplier:

3) I am also in the process of auditioning three different Virtual CD
programs that I found on zdnet.com. I will post the results. Right now I
am working with the Paragon CD Emulator product. An advantage over direct
copy is that it has good compression and takes less space on the HDD. It
also works slick for those pesky 2-disk programs (like MapSource) that want
to find the data disk in the same drive that you installed from and can
detect the difference between autorunning a CD and just trying to run Setup
from the copied-over files. I installed both CD's in the Virtual CD drive
and installed from the virtual CD. Works slick, but I still want to see
what the other products do.

4) I am finding ZDNet to be a great resource. Lots of downloads of
shareware, and plenty of information. You have probably all been there, done
that, but here it is:

DISCLAIMER: I have no personal interest in any of these ventures. I just
thought some of you would find them helpful as I did. To the rest, I
apologize for the use of bandwidth. Also, with the 3com rebate running out
today, that news seemed urgent. Best - Lee
