Date: Tue, 17 Apr 2001 13:11:27 +0100 From: "Philip G Spencer" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Problems reinstalling windows. The old HDD on my L100 packed up, so I got a 6GB Toshiba HDD to replace it. I'm having big problems trying to get Windows 98 running on it. I partitioned and formatted the new drive (just one ~6GB partition) in the Libretto, then I tried connecting it to my desktop using an IDE adaptor (and yes I'm sure I got all the ribbon cables the right way round). The problem here was that my desktop wouldn't then boot. It got as far as detecting the new HDD, but then it stopped (no error messages). I can enter setup and the BIOS seems to have detected the drive OK (I've no idea if the disk geometry picked up by autodetect is correct though - anyone have any ideas what it is? - so perhaps this is the problem here). For your information the desktop is a 600MHz Athlon on a Gigabyte 7ix motherboard. Next I tried using ghost (trial download from about six months ago) to copy the setup files from Win95 and Win98 CDs onto the laptop using a parallel cable. I copied the files onto a spare partition on the desktop (just a little bit smaller than the one on the libretto). These files appeared to copy onto the libretto, but when I tried to run the installations (both Win95 and Win98), halfway through I kept getting corrupt CAB file errors. Tried this a few times and kept getting the same errors. Next I tried installing Win95 using the floppies that came with the Libretto. Finnally success! However I can't get PCMCIA to work. In device manager there is an entry under "PCMCIA socket" that was initially for "PCIC or compatible PCMCIA controller", but was flagged as not working, so I changed it to "Intel PCIC compatible PCMCIA controller" and device manager now says it's working. Also in device manager, under "Other devices", there are two "PCI CardBus Bridge" entries and a "PCMCIA Card Services" entry (all flagged as working). However whenever I put a PC card device in, nothing happens. Since I want Win98, I need to be able to use my PCMCIA CD-ROM (Archos MiniCD) which I can't. Does anyone have any suggestions to fix any of these problems or can they provide me with appropriate working setings (hard drive parameters, PCMCIA settings)? As a side note, does anyone know if it's worth putting WindowsME, rather than Win98 on my libretto? I assume that it's too much of a performance hogg to make it worth while (is there a WinME-Lite?) By the way, I've only got Win98, first edition. If you have any answers, could you respond personnally as well as to the list please? Cheers, Phil Spencer.
