Marc,

Spinrite does not damage disks, but it does perform
read/write operations on the entire disk and in
doing so can reveal weak sectors.

Of course, disk failure is an independent event - it
can happen anytime and perhaps it was just coincidence
that you recently ran Spinrite.

Although, 8 hours of continuous disk activity can
stress the hard disk and perhaps the heat
generated brought the hard disk to its demise.
