In a stunning piece of design, Soundblaster set a standard which has two
sets of mute switches and level controls - one which handles the input to
the ADC and one which handles the output to the speakers. The also arranged
to put amplifiers *before* the level controls to ensure that if you have a
signal which is clipping, it will still be clipping no matter how far you
fade it down.
Then they arranged that the DMA transfers between the main CPU and the sound
card can only play or record on one channel at a time - so you can only go
duplex if e.g. you record on 16 bit and replay on 8 bit or vice versa. Nice
one guys.
Of course, in the interests of compatability, everybody else included this
'functionality' in their own design. Gee thanks!
Neil (somewhat irate after having to construct an external pad this weekend)
