Douglas,
Bear in mind that the windows default white background is the same
brightness as the 'bright white' dos colour - so normal white text on black
ground will always look a bit gloomy. If you don't see a problem on windows,
and that's what you normally use, I wouldn't touch it...if it ain't broke,
don't fix it!
