Subject: Libretto ff1100V questions
Hi all,
Just adding my 0.02 to the 1100 info - I've had the 1050 for over a year and a half
now, and it's still running well. (For most purposes - except camera etc - the 1050
and 1100 are the same beastie: same drivers, case etc).
One thing of note is that (as pointed out by Ken)the accessories for the 1050 and 1100
are compatible with the Portege 3010 (RAM, battery packs etc), which should make your
RAM upgrade attempts simpler. (I got the max RAM from LAOX when I bought it).
As for upgrading the hard-drive, well - the bad news is that it is a hell of a lot
harder than upgrading the L50 or L70 hard-drive (my previous Librettos). In those,
you merely had to undo the two screws and pull the hard-drive out through the side
access bay - this one you basically have to pull apart the entire machine, and a
couple of the screws holding the drive in use loc-tite or similar - not easy to get
torque up when holding a board you just paid quite a bit of money for and don't wish
to crush. Having said that though, the second time I upgraded the drive it was
easier, (when I bought it I swapped the 6G over from my L70, and later replaced that
with a 20G when I dropped the computer and stuffed the drive)and the BIOS quite
happily accepts drives greater than 8G.
The lack of a port replicator just means that I bought a USB port replicator (offering
three USB as well as a parallel and a serial port), and don't really notice the
problem any more.
As far as general build goes, the 1050 isn't as solid as the L70, (as well as being
slightly larger), and the plastic, while being shiny silver (unless you bought one of
the alternative cases that were available), does lose it's top layer quite easily if
frequently rubbed/scratched - the L70 (currently heading off to Britain with my
mother) still looks cleaner despite its greater age.
So - the libretto is still my only computer (at home it's plugged into a full
monitor/usb keyboard/tablet pad), and the only time I really feel the lack of grunt is
when I'm doing extensive photoshop tasks.
cheers,
Simon
ps. As always, good info can be found at http://pokemon.ho.org/ff1100/
