Subject: Re: Sony StreetMate GPS System

I have been using my trusty Libretto 60 with various US and Japanese software packages
since 1995. I also just purchased a new car here in the US last September with a
built-in package. They are both wonderful, each in its own right. The Libretto is
more portable and the built-in is more accurate.

With the laptop software, you only get a signal from the GPS receiver, which is only
as accurate as Selective Availability (now mostly released), propagation distortion,
foliage and multipath allow. This may skew your position from reality by several
hundred yards. As I have traveled around the US and Japan, I have gotten accustomed
to being my own DGPS, applying the correction in my mind to the arrow on the map.

The car navigation system built into my car integrates the GPS signal with the
roadways on the map and the rotation and direction of the front tires. By applying
logic to those three input sources, the system continually adjusts my position on the
map to within a few feet of true.

Unfortunately, I can't carry my car on a business trip on the other side of the
country or world. So, I happily pack my Libretto and its ETAK card and go off to
points unknown.

Cheers,

Michael
