It needed the bus speed dropping to 25MHz for correct operation of the disk, so I've raised the processor multiplier up to *2 so it runs at 100MHz. It's not as quick as once it was, though :( Disk partitioning was done in the lib, with 7.9G for the dos partition, 80M or so taking it to the limit as a D drive which was removed later. Disk then removed to a desktop machine, and W98 + backup files + mandrake 7.1 cds copied to the c: partition. Booted with mandrake 7.1 install cd in the desktop, to allow building some reiserfs partitions (the text install is the only option which will fit in 32M, and it doesn't offer reiserfs in fdisk - not that it mattered, see later): o 80M up to cylinder 1023 (previously formatted as D) as ext2 /boot o 128M after cylinder 1028 (leaving space for the hibernate) o 2G as reiserfs / o remaining 8G or so as reiserfs /home and a minimum linux installation done (with the intention of installing in situ so the X video would be ok). Booted from the floppy with a hard drive boot disk - which worked until it tried to find the image on the hard drive, for reasons I don't know. Ended up moving back to the desktop to install, then moving back to the lib to tweak the X drivers and remove all the other drivers not required, plus building pcmcia driver. Then loaded W98 from the hard drive, which promptly stomped on the bootloader (bad microsoft, bad - w2k doesn't do that) and then discovered that toms root boot wouldn't...so back to the desktop to reload the mandrake. Then downloaded a driver for the psion gold card combo, which went fine. So the only problem now is to get the floppy working in W98 - tried to load the CT100 but although it appears to load, I still get the yellow ! and sadness reigns. I got the drivers from Tosh via Amherst, maybe the wrong one? Anyway, this is coming from the Lib under linux via a local firewall, so the networking is working fine! Sorry for the long-windedness, but it might save someone else some time...
