Check out my reply to a similar query earlier today!

(Or run xf86config as root and tell it to give you a virtual screen)

For what it's worth...it sounds like you've told somewhere in the setup that 
your screen is bigger than it is. Your screen is 640x480 but a virtual 
screen of 800x600 is more useful.
