As long as the drive is 9.5mm (or less) high, then you should be
fine.  I have an L50 with an IBM drive in it too.

Shouldn't be any need to do so, as far as I know.  I've always been
too worried to update the bios on mine, and it's been working great  ;)

Unfortunately not.  I'd like to do this too  :(

Has anyone managed to find/make/home-drew a memory module to squeeze
more than 32Mb in?
