Hi all! OK we've had a number of people through #Libretto on DALNet already. If we get more traffic through there in the next week or so then we might start holding a vote to see who'll be the successor, cofounder, sop (super-ops) and aops (auto-ops) in the channel. For those who have no idea what I'm talking about, read on :-) For those unfamiliar with IRC, here's the deal. Download an IRC client. I personally recommend mIRC for Windows (www.mirc.com). For Linux peeps I hear BitchX isn't bad if you're stuck in command mode or use vIRC. In the case of mIRC, install it, fill in the details you want (you really ONLY need to fill in your email address and nickname, and neither needs to be valid) then go 'connect to random DALNet server'. When its done doing its bit join the channel called #Libretto (if you like, dismiss the channel dialogue that pops up then at the main window type "/join #Libretto" without the quotes). For those unfamiliar with DALNet services, here's the deal. DALNet provides a number of tools which allow for stable channels to be set up and maintained. The 2 utilities are nickserv and chanserv. To get details of each type (without the quotes) "/msg [EMAIL PROTECTED] help" and "/msg [EMAIL PROTECTED] help" whilst at the IRC console (obviously you need to be connected to a DALNet server first!). Nickserv lets you register a nickname so no-one else can use it or if someone else uses it they get notified that its a registered nickname. It also lets you send and recieve memos to and from other registered nicknames. Registering a nickname also lets you become a founder, cofounder, successor, sop (super-op) or aop (auto-op) in a Chanserv registered channel (which is what #Libretto is now). These offer varying levels of control of the channel and serve to prevent channel takeovers (Chanserv has superuser authority so even after a netsplit if someone tries to take over the channel all operators at aop level or above can kick/ban any unregistered user even from outside the channel for instance). And unlike services on other networks, neither Nickserv or Chanserv appear in the channel and both are actually surprisingly stable).
