This was my understanding.  I was told the reason CF cards are more $ than 
SM was because of the technology they employ made tem much faster.

I'm sure they have PC Card readers for SM.  I really can't say how much 
slower they might be, but it may not me a factor.  Maybe you could test 
drive something at a local high end photography shop.

I's probably not tha huge a deal... but I have no experience with it.  My 
16MB CF card (not big enough by any means) transfers all of its contents in 
a couple seconds.  If you have to wait 20-30 seconds for SM, that might not 
be a huge problem.  Again, maybe check with a local camera shop.
