I don't know if XP operates like W98.... but a lot of software wants to
install so it gets started quietly at boot, and ends up with icons in the
system tray (far right end ot task bar... does XP have this?)

In W98, I use MSCONFIG (Start> Run> MSCONFIG - in W98) to disable all of
this apps that don't need to be started at boot. It saves a LOT of system
resources. Check System Resources (System Properties> Performance - on W98)
before and after changes to see increase. The only two items that HAVE to
be running are EXPLORER and SYSTRAY, which are what I limit my Libbys to.

Systems I've worked on seem to work best with System Resources at more than
90%. My Libs are at 95%, and my 50CT actually ran the MusicMatch 4.0 MP3
player with the P75 when their tech people said the software needed at least
a P100 to function.
