Don't know. Never tried the HP on the L50 I had. I do know that desktop PCs with SCSI CD-RW drives can go as slow as 100Mhz w/o any problems to a years old 4x Yamaha CD-R drive. You can easily use Nero (www.ahead.de) to test - run a burn with simulate turned on and it'll tell you if it can burn the entire disc w/o any problems.
