That is part and parcel of the IRDA link.
Also, speed may be as low as 9600, but can be as fast as 115200 on the IR.
The devices negotiate this as they establish the link.
So, any speed hit is likely to be academic.

Note that the IR speed is independent of the serial speed, and will go to 
the fastest value both devices can support.
