There's a flaw in that argument though ... remember, the hard drive is the thing generating the heat so not only will the hole be of a different metal than the hard drive, it will also be significantly cooler. When I take the hard drive out, its too hot to touch whilst the inside of the case at the same time is reasonably warm but nowhere near as hot. A hole only gets bigger than the thing in the middle if both the hole and the thing in the middle stay at the same temperature or at least maintain their temperature difference.
