Looking back over Pres’s posts, and piecing the parts of the puzzle, I was finally able to sort out my problems, and create a Windows DCC (Direct Cable Connection) connection successfully between my L50 and L70 via IR (infrared). Th L70 setup was fine, but the L50 had a few problems. Pres had said that he got his systems to use DCC on a virtual IR COM4 port. When I looked at the IR settings for the L50 in Control Panel, I noticed that it was set for COM5 and LPT2, instead of COM4 and LPT3. For anyone interested, or for future reference, here are the problems I found with my setup. 1. IR had been turned off in the BIOS setup. This didn’t stop Windows from finding the IR hardware, and letting me use IR successfully from My Computer once it was enabled in Control Panel. However I think that the failure to configure the virtual ports may have originated here. I set this value to COM2 as Pres had said, and which coincided with the BIOS settings on my L70. 2. There needs to be two entries in Device Manager > Ports for: Virtual Infrared COM Port Virtual Infrared LPT Port I found these were present on my L70, but not on the L50. 3. There also needs to be an entry in Device Manager for: Infrared Devices This was also missing in my L50, and may have eventually created the entries in 2. above. I’ll skip the various things I tried to fix the problem. What I finally discovered worked was to go to “Add New Harware” in Control Panel, and follow the windows to where I could manually install a piece of hardware. I clicked “Infrared Devices” from the list, and when I clicked “Continue”, Windows set things up successfully. However the port settings for IR in Control Panel were still set to COM5 and LPT2, and DCC still didn’t work. So I deactivated IR in Control Panel, and did a CTRL-ALT-DEL, did a “End Task” on IR, deleted the IR entry in Device Manager, and rebooted. At that point I set up “Infrared Devices” in “Add New Harware” again, and rebooted again. After a full boot, I went into the IR properties in Control Panel to re-activate IR. At that point I found the IR virtual ports had been successfully reset to COM4 and LPT3. Then I was finally able to get DCC to connect the L50 to the L70 on COM4 via IR. One thing I noticed was how incredibly long it took for the guest system to see the host. I had only recently managed to eliminate the step for entering the name of the host system while connecting DCC via cable. But it’s appeared again using DCC via IR. It must have taken at least a minute or more for this window to pop up and ask for the host system name. Evidence of what people had warned would be a very slow connection I guess.
