The end of file looks like this: ======================================== VGA16 Mode "512x384" needs vert refresh rate of 77.9Hz Deleted [Note: There are a few dozen of these lines ^] VGA16Chipset: generic VGA16 videoram: 256 (using 256k) VGA16 clocks: 28.32 28.32 28.32 28.32 VGA16 maximum allowed dot-clock matching mode "640x480" VGA16 Removing mode "640x480" from list of valid modes VGA16 There's no mode definition named "800x600" Fatal server error No valid modes found X connection to: 0.0 (explicit kill or server shutdown) -x11TransSocketUnixConnect: Can't connect: errno = 111 ditto ditto ditto ... switching back to runlevel 3 ======================================== Neal had me set "runlevel = 3" in /etc/inittab which got me access to the KDE desktop via 'startx'. With "runlevel = 5" set, when I run startx, a few lines of commands scrolls by, and the system stops with a blinking cursor sitting on the left edge of the screen. Eventually I can hit 'Enter' and access the command line.
