Would it be dangerous using >lead-free electronics solder for this (lead-free solder requires a higher >temperature to melt)? Use the solder that's already on the board - leaded in this case I think. Mixing solders isn't usually a good idea. I don't recall the temperature in degrees - it's hot enough when a piece of solder wire melts *instantly* it comes into contact with the tip and flows onto the tip nicely. You'll need a hotter temperature with a finer tip as it will cool along the length more quickly. On our irons at work, it's usually around (er) number 4 - which isn't that helpful. 250-260 degrees C for lead/tin solder rings a bell. Note that you're better off with a hotter than a cooler iron - think what temperature the component is if you've been sat there ten minutes with the iron just below the melting point of the solder... > >Secondly, when the motherboard is unpowered, how safe is it using your >average digital multimeter to do continuity tests? No worries - 'olde worlde' continuity testers can throw sizeable fractions of an amp across the tested part, but DVMs use a micro-amp sized current. I'd recommend, if you're worried, to use the resistance range, rather than the diode test, which usually doubles as a continuity tester.
