Subject: Optiview anti-reflective film notes

Well, just got my sample yesterday.

Basically, relatively stiff plastic sheeting. Shiny. Removable adhesive so
you can take it off later. Have to really, really clean and dust-free the
panel, then apply the sheet and gently rub to get the adhesive to completely
stick. Won't work right if you dont rub it down.

Cut a small square off to test. Indoors, doesn't do much. Just about the same
with a hint of more contrast. But otherwise, about the same. Changing angles
of the panel reveals some differences. If you have some light right next to
it, at some greater viewing angles, you can still see the Libretto panel, but
the AR coated portion goes purple dark. Naturally, most would never view the
panel is such extreme angles, but you have to try and see.

out doors, it's another thing. in standard shaded daylight, more contrast
(blacker blacks) so you can see the screen a bit better. Not amazingly better,
but a touch/bit/noticable better than w/o. Basically difference comes from not
having the light reflect back diffusely from the rougher Libretto LCD panel vs.
the mirror like AR film surface.

In direct sunlight, well, about what you'd expect, washed out and nearly
impossible, if not impossible to read just because the backlight doesn't have
enough brightness to overcome the sun.

So worth it?

Well, it does help a bit if you're under indirect daylight, so for people that
work outdoors, great. Also, it makes the black level go down from the
gray-black to a blacker black, so it helps in graphics a bit as well. It is
like a mirror, so you have to decide if you want the mirror like reflection of
your face or not vs. the diffuse Libretto panel that doesn't reflect.

I'll have to see if I like it long-term. Thankfully, the releasable adhesive
comes off clean and easily (peel slowly and gently or you'll damage the LCD panel).
