The FDD for Toshiba Libretto ( any series will work, apparently ) is necessary to boot. The reason is, it is not actually PCMCIA, it merely fits the PCMCIA socket. BIOS directly speaks to the floppy. Only later when the Windows/Linux is loaded does it become PCMCIA with proper drivers. The NEC Ready 120LT has its external floppy plugged into the parallel port, as another example of a BIOS-driven external floppy.
