Make clean just deletes all the old .o files - it shouldn't make any .config changes. But leave it out of you are worried - I think a make dep will touch enough for a full recompile.

Good idea! Hadn't thought of that ... one thing though (this comes from a Unix systems newbie) ... I've played around quite a bit with the kernel stuff trying to get various things working and, from what I gather, 'make clean' sets me back to whatever the defaults were. What would be the easiest way to back up the stuff I've played with before I do this?
