Hey Digby,

Mandrake, mostly because it was (at the time) a modern distribution that would
install without too many problems. Also, it's compiled for 586 and I hoped
that would speed things up.

Installation can be done either in a different machine provided you remember
to put the stuff in to get the right video driver, or in a text-only mode.
There are complications, so have a look for some of the detailed instructions
I wrote for Matt - it's been a long time :)

Most current distributions need 64M and - critically - an 800*600 screen for
the pretty graphics - and some of them need a second floppy (early redhat
forex) which is problematical. I've had most success booting from a pcmcia
image and a cd or a hd image with the cd data copied to the fat partition. I
did successfully get gentoo onto it but that was scary (and slow) and
required a minimum system (with chmod and tar) before you start. There's an
explanation somewhere on the gentoo site that I wrote.

Mandrake 7.1 is a bit dated now - the files are a bit old - but the kde it
comes with is fast enough (cos it doesn't have all the nifty stuff) and in
fact I prefer that to later kdes.

Note that X4 doesn't work until the latest version, 3.3.6 is recommended in 16
bit for speed.

Biggest plus on 7.1 - it was the first distribution with reiserfs and never
having to wait while 12 gig got checked was rather nice. It works fine on
hibernation - which is more than I can say for the portege - and the pcmcia
stuff works better than on the portege too.

Neil
