Subject: Alternative power idea

I've located over 25% efficent solar cells. Do any of the engineers out
there have any opinions on how well they would work to power the 110CT
indoors or at least charge the battery and extend battery life? I think I've
come up with an idea for a decent light concentrator for the cells. I figure
the 110 needs ~600mA to operate properly and I think the cells could put at
least some of that into it. A panel could go right by the keyboard by
cutting a hole into the case for the cells and concentrator then wired to
the AC adapter jack through a stepup/down vr with a cutoff for when the AC
adapter is plugged in. The panel itself could be removeable for outdoor use.
If the present battery cells were replaced with 3 2000 mAh cells in the
extended battery pack the aditional room in the battery case could be used
for the wiring and circuit boards and such.
I'm not entirely sure where you mean to put the cells, perhaps you could clarify? In my experience with solar cells you'll need a *lot* more area than the Libretto has in order to put out anywhere near 600mA even under full sunlight. We're talking at least the area of a couple of A4 sheets of paper, more if you want it to be reliable.

Also remember, light concentrators aren't terribly useful in photovoltaics, at least those of the silicon variety (note that pretty much no commercial silicon photovoltaic installation actually uses concentrators). The efficiency of those panels plummets when they get hot (yes it is ironic and it does cause problems) which would be a problem that potential concentrators would have to address for instance. I'd imagine the optics required to extend the effective area of the cells whilst spreading the light evenly across all the cells would cost more than just adding cells and/or be way too bulky to use for the purpose of powering the Libretto anyway.
