I'm not entirely sure that it's possible. Yes, Windows 98 SE does have inbuilt drivers for ATA flash but it activates those drivers when it activates the PCMCIA sockets ... if I'm not mistaken, this takes place *after* it initializes the swap file. If you want to check, do a logged bootup and see where it loads the PCMCIA sockets. If by that time it's well into loading miscellaneous drivers and programs then you can be pretty sure it would have already activated the swap file. Of course, someone correct me if I'm wrong here.Date: Fri, 3 Jan 2003 12:39:43 -0300 From: =?iso-8859-1?Q?Hern=E1n_Crosta?= <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Flash memory I have a 110ct which 32Mb RAM memory and use Win98SE operating system I' want to use a ATA flash memory card as a virtual disk for the Windows swap file and put more of 64 Mb of RAM .It's this possible ? Has the Win98SE any driver for the flash card ? And can the ATA flash memory work as swapping file? Any suggestions ? Thank to all , and had a good New Year!
Another thing to be mindful of is that ATA flash memory is in fact *slower* than the internal hard drive (especially if you've upgraded it) and more CPU intensive to access (remember that ATA flash is designed for non-volatile solid state storage, not fast random access). You may be better off storing archive or data files on the flash card and using the freed up space on the hard drive as the swapfile. There are PCMCIA memory cards out there (*NOT* flash cards) which were designed to supplement main memory but they stopped using those ages ago (we're talking 386 era) ... the highest capacity you're likely to see of those would probably be 4MB, hardly enough to make a difference on an L110 ...
Of course, adding an extra 32MB of system RAM to get you up to 64 would boost your performance considerably as would swapping out the orginal hard drive for a faster (and larger!) one. Bear in mind that the newer, faster hard drives also generate considerably more heat which can be a problem if you've overclocked your laptop and you live in warm climates (especially because the heatsink bar for the processor sits right above where the hard drive is). More than once I've had my laptop go into thermal shutdown just sitting on my desk (when the air conditioning hasn't been switched on).
