Subject: OT: Problem w/Satellite Pro 420CDT
Does anyone know why there was something like 5-10MB or more of free space
at the end of at 1.3GB HDD of a Toshiba Satellite Pro 420CDT after the C:
partition?
I decided to resize the C: partition down, and add a 110MB D: partition to
load Win98 setup files onto. But after that, booting the system failed.
With no FD in the FDD, a boot message was displayed about an invalid system
disk, and to remove it and hit any key, as if I had a non-system FD in the
FDD. I changed Boot: HDD > FDD in BIOS, but boot still failed.
Booting from a system FD and running dir on C:, a bunch of hash scrolled
by. Turns out the FATs were blown to pieces by the partitioning process of
PM! So Ive joined your league on the PM issue Raymond. Running scandisk a
couple times looked like it would fix the problem But running dir on C:
got nothing but a bunch of those recovered file check files.
Luckily I had just backed up all data, and had intended to reformat C: and
install Win98. So I used my free LapLink clone, File Maven to get Win98
setup files to D:, reformatted C: and loaded Win98.
But Im left to wonder what the heck that little bit of free space at the
end of the C: partition was all about. Thoughts of Windows swap file space
come to mind, but that would require a formatted partition.
Does anyone have any idea about what its for, and if I may end up with OS
problems if I dont recreate it?
Matt
