2k will work either way but really wants smartdrv running, or the file copying
is glacial. Sounds like it needs more than 640k to do the bootstrap. Loading
a minimum 98 first is not a bad idea, provided you have the cdrom drivers for
it.

CD-ROM drive? To install W98? I have the W98 installation directory on my D: partition. So I can either install W98 from there, or use a Ghost image I have. But the image has all of the Tosh and some other hardware drivers. Maybe just going with the basic W98 installation with nothing else might be better. Reason??? The CD-ROM drivers would be useful to install XP from Win98 though.

True. single colour background, not an image. An image takes up around a meg,
twice (once to paint it, once in a buffer while windows and suchlike move.

Really? I occasionally make a bmp graphic from photos I've taken or friends send me, and set it as a desktop graphic in W98. Have never tried testing the system's speed without it. Is it not as much of an issue in W98 as in XP?

Whoever thought they were a cool idea wants taking out to the back forty and
reintegrating with the environment. Lose'em.

I'm not quite sure how, but somehow 'm sure I'll find a way to manage life without them.

Er, install something other than MS bloatware?

Hey... It's like Harley Davidsons UK/Europeans seem to be so infatuated with! Big, heavy and loud, like much else from the US, such as tourists. ;-P

I don't think so - W2K and it's descendents actually have an idle cycle that
stops the processor as amnHLT do.

Okay... Good to know. Thanks for the tips Neil.
