  Smaller:
Sony U series (You really can't go lighter/smaller in a useable XP notebook
than this today.)

  About the same:
JVC Interlink 7310 series (1Ghz Pentium-M CPU for latest model)

A bit bigger, about the same weight:
Used Sony Picturebooks (built-in digital cameras)
Fujitsu P1000 series (touch-screen pen input)

Noticably bigger, about the same weight:
Toshiba Portege R100 series (12" screen, but same 2lbs weight! super-thin)
  Panasonic R2

A bit bigger, a pound heavier:
  Fujitsu P2000 series
  Fujitsu P5000 (T90D/T70E in Japan)
    (world's smallest DVD burning-Japan models!, super-bright screen)
Sony TR1/TR2 series (built-in digital camera, super-bright screen)

  Noticably bigger, a pound heavier:
  Used Sony SRX series
  Panasonic W2

Of course, if you can live w/o XP and only need a super-light portable that
runs Linux, there's the <8oz Sharp SL-C750/760 PDAs with 640x480 LCD, keyboard,
touch-screen, Office-compatible suite, and web browser.

  ----

  Of these, my picks are:
  * Fujitsu P5000 (T90D/T70E): does everything w/built-in DVD burner for the
Japanese model (US model gets DVD burner next year) in 3lbs. There is no other
notebook on the market today smaller with a DVD burner. Get some serious work
done with these babies.

  * Sony TR2: Can't find a nicer screen on a mini-notebook than this one.
Super-bright, super-clear, just plain awesome. Built-in digital camera doesn't
hurt. You'll never squint trying to read a screen that isn't bright enough.

  * Toshiba R100: Think Libretto, faster, squished super-flat and wide enough
to make the 12" screen useable all day long. Benchmarks as fast as the above,
and runs at least 110-120 MobileMarks (as do the above two). Bigger screen is
a bonus vs. above two, esp. if you want something more comfy than their 10"
wide-screens.

  * Panasonic W2: Toshiba R100 + 1lbs + built-in CD-RW drive.

  * JVC Interlink: Think exactly the same as the Libretto, but faster.

  ----

  Top picks?

Fujitsu with DVD burner. They're all $2k machines, so might as well get
everything + the DVD burner as well for the money. I really like having an
optical drive built-in, so there you go.

Otherwise, if you really want the same form factor and weight as the
Libretto, JVC Interlink. It's practically what the Libretto would have been if
Toshiba kept updating it and true to the original form factor. The JVC could
drop right into any Libretto setup and you'd have the same size and weight as
the older L110 models, but get a nice, fast 1Ghz Pentium-M class machine with
even wider wide-screen. (One could just have a Libretto logo made and stick it
on the JVC and call it a Libretto ,)=
