Hm, Windows can't deal with those? Odd... I wonder whether you could
work around that by replacing the links with actual duplicates
of the files/directories.

Which gives me ideas about my SCSI PCMCIA adapter... ...and yes, I have

Yup. As I said, it's not that important to me, so I never bothered to
find out. Thanks for the hints, though!

Ok, ok, "extremely long", then... It's even noticeable on my dual
PIII/600, which is not as such a slow machine...

I was wondering about that. I originally put it down to the fact that
Mandrake supplies everything and the kitchen sink in modules with their
kernel, as that was suggested on the Mandrake "expert" list. The
workaround I'm using for the boot is in fact disabling a modprobe
command, which improved things a lot.

Maybe. I think it's devfs related, again, as I can get it to work if I
