True but

1: There's no guarantee that standalone cells aren't any older anyway

yes there is. A good distributer keeps them properly and doesn't lie about how old they are.

2: If you're looking at $10USD a cell for a pack that gives you 5 hours of Windows runtime or $7USD for a 6-cell pack that gives you 3 hours of Windows runtime, I know which one I'll pick!

The 7 dollar one? Why, when it only gives half the battery life and will need to be replaced in six months or less? Why not just rig a nimh or nicad system in? You'll get equivilent battery life and only spend 10 bucks for replacement cells. Plus the cells will last a couple years or better.

Just because the packs are unused does not mean the cells are any good. If the pack was *manufactured* more than a year ago the cells will not give the *same* battery life as fresh cells. Li-ion deteriates with age even if *unused*.

You can sometimes find new (unopened, unused) packs for older laptops for sale much cheaper than you can buy the individual cells ...

Why use used when new works better. You can buy new cells for the 110 for around 10 bucks apiece and a complete cell replacement for 75-80. I use a 3000 mAh pack and get 8 hours of battery life running linux 5 hours running windoze.
