Subject: External Travelstar Case Modification?

Hi!

I've got the well-known PCMCIA controlled drive in enclosure. However, the box is just
huge. It didn't bother me much until now that the warranty is expired and that I am
about to leave home for a while.

My version is 18 GB, yes IBM never produced it, the guys here have obviously modified
it putting DARA-218000 9.5 mm tall drive inside. There is no electronics inside, just
a small board for interconnection, a little too wide, but seems that I can cut off the
unnecessary part with the coax power input and on/off switch to make it 70 mm wide.

Any good ideas as to where I can transplant the guts of the box? After all, is heat an
issue with the modern drives? A few watts seems to be negligible, but part of the lib
with the drive gets hot a bit... Metal box as close to the size of the disk as
possible seems the best, however the metal top of the drive is not flat, how can a
good thermal contact be established? Any shock-absorbing layers (in fact, that's what
we mostly find inside Travelsar E - clearly redundant)?

Thanks everybody in advance.

Vitaly
