If Windows XP + SP1 can't work with the HD alone, you'll need some sort of disk
manager program to get it to run.

As for the error, no idea, but see the manufacturer's support website.  Never
had any disk manager program fail on me.  

(Oh, you must boot to the disk, use DOS, not a DOS window inside Windows, to
install and use these programs.)

No, the external enclosure won't do anything the OS can't do.  Thus, if you
only have XP (not XP + SP1) or other OS that doesn't support >137GB HDs, then
you still can't see the entire external HD.  You'll have to upgrade the OS
and/or install disk manager first.

A big reason to make sure you're running 2000 + SP4 or higher or XP + SP1 or
higher or a disk manager on your PCs if you're thinking of putting in a large
HD.  Otherwise, stick with <= 120GB HDs.
