I had the same problem with my USB2 PC card and never looked into a solution. It seems that I don't get any complaints from Win98 when I pull a device without 1st stopping the device. Win2000 will complain. My USB2 is dead now so I can't test it. I've had an old 50CT plugged in since 1998, and the battery still works fine. Obviously I haven't run the system solely on the battery pack very often.
