if the rest is fine, it's most likely 1) the pins from the PCMCIA card slot to
the motherboard is damaged (excess flexing may cause they to break the solider
joints) 2) the PCMCIA card slot itself (pins or otherwise) is damaged.

Basically, if you've already dropped in a clean OS, tested it and it still
fails, time for a replacement....
