One of my biggest concerns, because I have a significant portfolio in
SL, is the ability to do a clean backup / restore of my SL artifacts.
My understanding is that this is likely to be very difficult,
especially the restore part (at least in an automatic way).
Any thoughts on this?

I'm assuming you are talking about objects (prims) in Second Life, being
able to backup things out of your inventory or on your land to lets say
an xml file off the grid, and importing that xml back in to the grid. If
you can get it out in to a sensible format, putting it back in is easy.
Right now there is one section of data in the object packets that isn't
understood, I bet if someone worked on it they could get it. I don't
have time myself to investigate objects but if the format is understood,
the packets to fetch it and put it back in are easy enough to implement.
One tricky thing would be identifying what you want to backup though.
Giving a bot "eyes" in the game is tricky.
If you are talking about backing up sounds, textures, and animations
that's been happening long before we started this and is fairly trivial.
